Southern CA Highlights + Tips for Healthy Traveling

This past week I spent about two full days traveling and 3 days in southern California for a few client meetings. I’ve been traveling a lot this year, so I’m working on finding the best ways (for me) to stay healthy and sane.

What I take on the plane:

  • Filtered water bottle (you can fill up at places like Starbucks and Quiznos, or at a bottle filler station)
  • Vitamins (EmergenC, Green Superfoods)
  • Probiotics
  • Snack bars, easy-to-eat fruit, almond butter, nuts
  • And, of course, my Kindle, glasses and earbuds

Ways I fit in exercise:

  • Yoga or at least some stretching before the plane ride and after, plus any evening I have free time (I use reflexionyoga.com or YouTube videos)
  • Walk around and explore the terminal during layovers
  • Do quick in-room exercises like this
  • Walk around the area if time/location permits

On this trip I stuck to light exercise. I walked around Claremont (a little over 3 miles the one morning) and did yoga in my room. (I really want this travel yoga mat!) I also got in plenty of walking around Hollywood, Newport Beach and while at the office in City of Industry. I need to start taking my sneakers…they just take up so much dang space in my bag.

I’ve been to Los Angeles (+ surrounding cities) many times over the past 3 years, but had never done any touristy things. We went up to the Hollywood sign and walked around Hollywood Blvd. We actually stumbled across the red carpet premier for The Gambler with Mark Wahlberg, but none of us were interested enough to stick around. The people watching was pretty great, though. Hollywood, you’re quite the unique place. We also drove through Beverly Hills and down Rodeo drive, which were beautiful.

I cannot stop gushing about how much I love Claremont. It’s just the cutest little college town with a great vibe. We stayed at Hotel Casa 425, which I’ve been dreaming about ever since I stayed there a few years ago. The best feature is the square tub in the middle of the room, but the courtyard is also really nice. I only filled the bathtub a little bit because I felt guilty about the water use, but it was still relaxing.

There were so many healthy food options. It was amazing. It would be so much easier to eat out occasionally if I lived in CA. I searched on Yelp for some local breakfast places and found The Spot. I had time on Wednesday morning, so I walked the mile over there and had some delicious oatmeal and an almond milk latte.

On our last night we stayed near the airport (Santa Ana/Orange County) to make our 6:45am flight a little easier. The Uber app broke just when we needed it, but we had a priceless ride to Newport beach with a cabbie who danced to Shake it Off and made a strobe light in the van. How cool is Uber, though? We used it on the way back to the hotel, and I’m a big fan. Anyway, we ate at The Beachcomber at Crystal Cove, which was the first place I ate during my first trip to CA. It was nice to revisit it and eat on the beach again.

An issue I run into while traveling, other than trying to stay healthy and active, is preserving my energy as an introvert. Generally when I travel for business, I’m with people for at least 14 hours a day. Plus, with the time zone changes on this trip, I didn’t sleep more than 6 hours a night, so my time to recharge was very limited. I had a great time and was actually pretty energized by the socialization, but I promptly got a migraine at 2am the morning after I returned. Then I slept about 10 hours each night since returning. It took at least 2 days to get back to feeling normal. SO, that’s something I need to work on.

To keep a handle on stress, I generally try to limit working while at the airport and especially while on the plane. I spend that time walking (in the airport) or reading (on the plane). I finished three books ($100 Startup, Platform and The Giver) on this trip and spent time brainstorming ideas for my business and this blog. It’s impossible for me to be creative if I don’t force myself to disconnect, so a 4.5 hour plane ride is the perfect opportunity (or at least used to be, before Wifi was available EVERYWHERE.) Something about the Delta ads promoting continuing your work day on the plane annoyed me.

Overall, my best tips to stay healthy while traveling are:

  • Pack healthy snacks for the plane
  • Drink lots of water! Don’t be tempted to limit your water so you don’t have to use the bathroom.
  • Walk as much as you can to keep blood circulating
  • Take time to stretch, meditate and/or relax in your hotel room
  • Try to get as much sleep as possible

They may seem simple and obvious, but they each make a huge difference.
